Useful Citizens of the Universe

I was reading an article in the Khaleej Times about teacher satisfaction surveys (after hearing from teachers who filled it out) and was struck anew at the delicate work that is translation.

He stressed that the ultimate aim of the Abu Dhabi education is to transform and help every child to become a man of good character and useful citizen of the universe. He added that we can achieve this through the quality of education, quality of teachers and quality of teaching learning process. (italics mine)

They got the subject-verb agreement down pat, and the singular nouns matching, but...well, I mean...

Look. I'm not making fun or trying to insult the editorial staff at Khaleej Times. Language is funny. And "useful citizen of the universe" is an excellent goal for all students: Emiratis, Martians - everyone.
